Autumn pumpkins and fallen leaves beside a candle lantern at dusk

In Defence of Early Evenings

14 October 2026

Autumn has a talent for taking back what summer lent us. The light goes first, a little earlier each evening, and nobody complains too loudly, because darkness, handled properly, is simply an excuse for better lighting.

Consider the pumpkin. Left to itself, it is a pleasant but rather sleepy thing. Add a little cinnamon, some nutmeg and a hint of ginger, and it becomes something else entirely. October has a way of doing that — taking ordinary things and making them feel more suited to the season.

It is probably why Pumpkin Spice Kitchen makes so much sense at this point in the year.

Candlelight is one of those inventions we have never really managed to improve. It softens a room, slows the hour and makes even an ordinary evening feel a little more deliberate. It is very difficult to feel hurried by a candle, which may be part of the reason we begin reaching for one earlier at this time of year.

A house, like a person, changes its wardrobe with the season. The fresh greens of summer have had their turn, and the rooms begin to suit something warmer — spice, amber, woods, perhaps a little smoke.

The change does not have to be dramatic. A candle on a side table is enough to alter the mood of a room. A reed diffuser in the hallway does something quieter, working in the background throughout the day and greeting you before you have even taken your coat off.

That is one of the things I like about scent at this time of year. It becomes part of the atmosphere rather than something you consciously notice every minute. You walk into a room and it simply feels warmer, calmer, more settled.

And then there is the light itself.

In the summer, the days stay light much longer. That make us forget how pleasant an evening can be.

Autumn, after all, does not take the light away so much as ask us to supply our own.

On that note, enjoy your evening.
