Pumpkin Spice Kitchen

Let me tell you about Pumpkin Spice Kitchen.
Cold, the fragrance gives itself away quite quickly. There is plenty of clove, plenty of cinnamon and that unmistakable smell of apple. The apple is not sugary-sweet. It has that slightly tart, late-season quality — the kind of apple that feels much more autumn than summer.
Then you light it.
And this is where it changes.
The spices are still there, but they stop standing at the front. The vanilla begins to come through much more clearly and suddenly the whole fragrance becomes softer. There is something almost pastry-like about it — warm vanilla, baked fruit and spice rather than simply cinnamon and clove.
The clove gives it that familiar little bite. Cinnamon brings warmth. Apple keeps the fragrance alive and prevents it from becoming too heavy. And underneath all of that, vanilla seems to pull everything together.
There is jasmine in the fragrance too. I would never describe Pumpkin Spice Kitchen as floral, but there is a softness running through it which stops all those kitchen spices from becoming harsh. Knowing what is in it, I suspect that is where some of that softness comes from.
And after a while, something else happens.
It starts to make you think about food.
Not hunger exactly. More that autumn feeling when suddenly a cold salad is no longer quite what you fancy. You start thinking about something warm. Soup. Fresh bread. Something baked. Something that has been in the oven long enough to make the kitchen smell good before you even walk into it.
That is what this candle does for me.
It reminds me of walking into a kitchen after vanilla and cinnamon biscuits have been baking, with apples somewhere nearby and that warmth still hanging in the room.
And perhaps that is where the pumpkin comes in too.
Not necessarily pumpkin pie. More the pumpkin itself — that deep orange colour, sitting on a kitchen table in October, surrounded by apples, spices and everything that belongs to that particular moment of the year.
When it is burning, Pumpkin Spice Kitchen does not smell dark or heavy to me.
It smells like a warm day in autumn.
That little bit of sweetness still left in the season. Warm spices. Fresh pastry. Apples. Vanilla. And the feeling that it might be time to make something good to eat.
For something that never went near the oven, it does a remarkably convincing job.
